Swellings Are Bad News! Symptoms of Serious Illnesses and Treatments

Knots and thickenings can be a sign of serious health issue, therefore when you notice some change on your body visit a doctor immediately.

Swollen Lips

The most common reason: Ulcer. Most often caused by teeth wounds, when we brush our teeth too hard, when we are stressed, when we have a change in the level of hormones and when we are not feeling good.
Treatment: Pills, gels, antibiotics, washing the lips and mouth with cold water before a meal for the process of feeding is less uncomfortable.
When to react: If the swelling does not go away within 10 days, additional examination is needed. Every whitish formation in the mouth that could not be eliminated by washing, especially if it’s reddish in the middle or red with white core, could be a sign of cancer.

Neck Swelling

The most common reason: It could be a cyst that forms when the sweat gland opening gets clogged and this creates a knot that does not hurt when touched. This kind of swelling does not become malignant.
Treatment: The swelling in the gland can point to an infection which most often is treated with antibiotics.
When to react: You should visit the doctor right away if you notice swellings on the side of your neck which are pretty hard because they can be one of the signals for blood cancer, cancer with metastasis to other parts of the body, or the Hodgkin’s disease. For those that have problems with thyroid gland, the swellings appear in the middle portion of the neck around the Adams apple. It is recommended to seek medical assistance if the swelling becomes larger or does not  disappear within 3 weeks.

Swelling in the Shoulders

The most common reason: The lipoma is a benign formation of fat cells, which forms most often in the shoulder region, although it can appear on any part of the body that tends to have fats. It can have the size of a been with a diameter of up to 2.5 cm
Treatment: It can be removed by a simple minor operation, especially if it is applying pressure on some nerve and causing pain. This procedure is done under local anesthesia.
When to react: There is no need to worry.

Breasts Swelling

Knots and swelling on the breasts are not malignant in 90 percent of the cases. For women younger than 30 it is usually the case of fibroaden: a swelling that doesn’t hurt and it appears because of fluctuations of the hormonal levels. Cysts are especially common in women between the ages of 30 and 40 and they can be the size of a bean with rounded corners. They won’t turn into cancer, but if they are many, that means that the tissue is “active” and needs to be checked more often.
Special attention is needed if the breasts have changed their texture, contour or size, if wrinkles, redness or pain appear, or you feel discomfort in only one breast.

Swelling of the Legs

The most common reason: Dermatofibroma is an illness that is characterized by forming knots that can appear matte, shiny, or like the skin has started to peel. They usually have a diameter of 1.5 cm and have scar tissue. In most cases the patient has one growth, but often more often than not it happens for more to develop. They can appear after small wounds, after getting stung by insects or if you have perforated your skin with a sharp object.
Treatment: It doesn’t create any kind of damage and therefore it is not needed to be surgically removed, unless the person in question wants to do it out of aesthetic reasons, or if the knot is increasing in size. In rare cases they disappear on their own.
When to react: If the knot starts bleeding or hurting, itching or if the swelling does not go down.

Swelling in the Armpit

The most common reason: Tightening of the hair follicles, swelling of the lymph glands or the breast tissue. Sebaceous glands can create lumps under the skin, and lymph glands react to infections and viruses. Woman who breast-feed often notice swelling under the armpits.
Treatment: Mainly with antibiotics, unless the changes are connected with the menstrual cycle.
When to react: When the swelling is soft, sticky and a little painful, and the pain increases after alcohol consumption because it might signal Hodgkinson disease or breast cancer.

Swelling of Wrists

The most common reason: a Ganglion-cyst that form when there is fluid in the wrist. Size varies and the cause for them appearing is unknown.
Treatment: If it causes pain, or makes movements of the hand difficult, a doctor can remove the fluid under the skin with a syringe. In half the cases the swelling reappears.
When to react: In rare cases it can be a cause of sarcoma, a type of cancer that attacks the muscles, the fatty cells, the blood vessels, nerves and the deep layers of tissue of the skin.
