There are many things lurking in the sheets you may not be conscious of, and which can be dangerous to your health. That is why cleanliness and washing sheets regularly is important.
Almost every bed has dust mites, microscopic bugs that feed from the dead skin cells. These bugs live, die, and reproduce in the bed sheets you sleep in.
You can get rid of these bugs only if you wash the bed sheets regularly. If not, you can develop an allergy, or your immune system can decrease.
Here’s what else you can have in your sheets:
- Our body drops about a million skin cells daily, and some of those skin cells come off while sleeping. They are a delicious food for dust mites.
- Natural oils are secreted from your body while sleeping, which, ends up on your bed sheets.
- We all sweat during the night, so of course, sweat ends up on the sheets too.
- Saliva, blood, urine, fecal matter and bodily fluids from intercourse can show up on your bed sheets.
- If you like eating in bed, there are probably crumbs and other food particles that are want to be eaten by bugs.
The easiest way to get rid of some dirt accumulated in your bedding is by simply shaking off the sheets and blankets before you go to sleep. However, changing and washing your bedding regularly is extremely important for preventing some serious skin diseases.
How often should you wash your bed sheets and how to do it?
Sheets need to be washed at least every other week, but every week is the perfect option. Also, it is essential to wash your pillow minimum twice a year. Pillows you put your head on can have mold, yeast and bacteria, which can cause diarrhea, asthma or bronchitis.
The sheets of a person who is sick and you are taking care of should be washed every day. Otherwise, that person won’t be getting better in a bed filled with germs. If you can’t wash it every day, just change the pillowcase daily.
The key to keeping bedding clean is to know how to clean it. It’s important to follow the manufacturer’s care instructions, but if you aren’t familiar with them, then follow these tips to clean everything from sheets to comforters:
Bed sheets need to be washed in hot soapy water and dried completely in the dryer. Washing them with clothes can damage the sheets or make them fuzzy.
You can whiten your sheets by adding a quarter of a cup of lemon juice to the wash and wash with warm water.
When washing or drying, use medium or low setting.
Wash wool blankets in cold water and put on a low spin in the dryer.
Electric blankets should not be dry-cleaned because the solvents used can damage the wiring.
You can vacuum the blankets in between washing, if you do not want to wash them often.
Clean your comforter or bedspread in a commercial washer and dryer.
Wash the comforter in cold water and dry it on low heat.
Quilts should be washed the same way as a comforter.

Do not wash the quilt if it has silk or velvet on it.
Wash pillows in machine in cold water and dry them on a cool setting.
Fluff the pillows every day to remove lingering dust and dead skin cells.
If the weather is nice, get your mattress outside. The sun has a natural cleaning ability and can eliminate bacteria that hides in the mattress. Grab a bat, golf club, etc. and beat the mattress for 10-20 minutes. This way you will eliminate dead human skin cells, dust mites and their feces.
Here is another option of cleaning the mattress: If you can’t get it outside, sprinkle baking soda over the mattress and let it sit for at least 30 minutes to absorb any odors. Then, vacuum the mattress.
Make sure the mattress is completely dry before putting the covers and sheets back on. Moisture allows growth of molds, mildew, and bacteria.
